  • Manage the direction and content focus for all of EarthWeb’s software and web development sites including Developer.com, CodeGuru, Gamelan, JARS, HTMLGoodies, Javascripts, VBForums, and more.
  • Budget, plan, and staff for my area of the business. Since starting I've managed to maintain quality and content while cutting my budget by over 75%.

  • Determine and manage the execution of a publishing plan. Focus on Microsoft development technologies: programming and database topics such as C#, Visual C++, Visual Basic, ASP/ASP.NET, Visual Studio, SQL Server, COM/COM+, Exchange, Office, and much more.
  • Responsible for all aspects of budgeting, planning, and staffing for my area of the business.
  • Managed a full-time staff of 12 people.
  • Provide technical and organizational feedback regarding the overall department direction as well as content of current projects to my staff, other management, and our clients.

      Executive Editor/Title Manager, MCP (9/96 to 2/99)

  • Determined and executed the publishing of individual titles for the area of computer programming for "expert" users on programming topics for all Macmillan imprints including Que, Sams, Sams.net, New Riders Publishing, the Waite Group Press, and Ziff Davis Press.
  • Fiscally responsible for individual book projects that my team developed.
  • In addition to primary focus areas, I maintained an understanding of programming/development tools and programming languages including Visual Basic, Java, C/C++, COM, ActiveX, and more.
  • Focused specifically on Web Technologies for New Riders Publishing and expert-level programming books for Que Publishing from 9/96 to 8/97.

    Development Editor/Acquisitions Editor (3/94 to 3/96)

  • Negotiated contracts and determine fees to be paid for each project. These amounts ranged from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the project.
  • Determined acceptability of the materials received based on technical and organizational issues.
  • Maintained a working knowledge of current and upcoming programming technologies.
  • Initiated and lead the creation of a software product that hit Entertainment Weekly’s bestseller software list (The Doom Companion).

Company was bought out. I worked at Macmillan from March of 1994 to September of 2000 with the exception of this time.

  • Managed a team of six full-time developers and a number of temporary programmers on the project. 
  • Oversaw the process of designing and developing the key modules of a distributed client/server system using Windows NT Server, PowerBuilder, Microsoft SQL Server, Visual C++, Visual Basic, and more.
  • Set direction, goals, and time estimates in coordination with the members of my team.
  • Used project planning, development, testing, and management tools.
  • Lead code walkthroughs and reviewed code for maintainability, efficiency and adherence to standards. Helped create, set, and document standards.
  • Aided directly in the development process, creating Visual C++ DLLs.

  • Lead the planning, development, and testing of the key modules of a large-scale, nationally-distributed, proprietary software package.
  • Managed a team of 5 full-time and 10 part-time people.
  • Served part-time on a large-scale, re-engineering project (mainframe to distributed client/server). Applied Ernst & Young’s methodology using ADW.
  • Analyzed and determined features, created specifications and test plans, and oversaw development and deployment.
  • Aided in the development process using C/C++, Brief, Soft Ice, Bounds Checker and PVCS.
  • Took an active role in the evaluation of software tools and technologies to determine the best fit for our needs.

  • Designed and developed a number of stand-alone and distributed systems for diverse functions such as order-entry/sales, training evaluation, time tracking, inventory control, and statistical analysis.
  • Most projects were PC-based, using C, IBI FOCUS, dBase, Clipper, Project Scheduler.
  • Some projects were mainframe-based, using COBOL, CICS, and JCL.
  • Took an active role in the interviewing and hiring new PC developers and in providing formal training, mentoring and supervision.
